Château Bastor-Lamontagne 'Confidence', Bordeaux Blanc 2021
The vineyards of Château Bastor-Lamontagne, fully organic since 2016, are planted 80% with luscious semillon, 20% with sauvignon blanc. Once owned by the kings of France and on gravel terraces above the river Garonne in Preignac and close to the greatest vineyards of Sauternes, this fine château, like them, makes a small quantity of superb Bordeaux Blanc, as well of course as Sauternes. It is as good as any white Graves, and I recommend you pair with with shellfish, as I did over the weekend.
Esme Johnstone loved this wine as much as I did, and said:
"A very pleasant surprise, this is no ordinary white Bordeaux, far from it. When I tasted Château Bastor-Lamontagne, it reminded me of Château Haut Brion 2021 which I tasted in May and sells for just under £9,000 a case. It does not of course have the same pedigree or provenance but at 1/40th of the price, it is outstanding value. It is a gorgeous wine".
