Vouvray Le Marigny Sec, Bernard Fouquet 2020
A pale, golden shimmer in the glass with elegant aromas of apricot, citrus and pear. The palate is so well balanced, delicate baked apple, citrus and a rounded character. There's a faint hint of warming French oak adding texture and a herbaceous note to the finish which coats the palate. The finish is dry but not aggressively so with a freshening zing complemented by the delicate honied finale.
Such good winemaking on show here - balancing the oak so as to enhance the texture and depth of flavour, whist preserving the elegance of the chenin blanc grape. This is a real masterpiece.
Fine chenin blanc offers a perfect balance between the tropical aromatics associated with that other Loire favourite, sauvignon blanc, and the texture and richness you more often associate with chardonnay from Burgundy.
This will certainly be one of my 'go-to' summer whites and I hope it will be one of yours too!
