We have sold several hundred cases of the delightfully mature Château Saint-Nicolas 1998 over the last 12 months and are now coming to the end of our stock, and there is no more (we have less than 50 cases left).

Here’s why everyone scrambles for cases of the glorious 1998 claret immediately it arrives at our warehouse:

  • Fronsac is the most undervalued appellation for high quality wines in Bordeaux - hence under £20 for a wine that has been in bottle for 20 years. It is where most of famous Bordelais wine makers such as Michel Rolland have their own vineyards, and they should know.

  • 1998 was a great and very successful vintage on the Right Bank.

  • Château Saint-Nicolas vineyards are some of the best terroir in Fronsac and the château is run with passion, prioritising quality above all else.

  • It is the perfect wine for claret lovers with a taste for mature merlot with soft burnt berry fruit flavours with an undertone of leather, spice and tobacco.

How long will it last? At least another 2-3 years, possibly longer. My advice having re-tasted it last week is to open the bottle 15-30 minutes before you drink it and finish it off on the day you open it which shouldn’t be a problem!

How does the wine taste? Customer Reviews (3)
On the palate there's a surprising swathe of sweet, mulberry fruit with a hint of red currant, it's quite remarkable, you have to keep reminding yourself that this is over twenty years old, lesser wines would have faded long ago. Then there's the evolution from delicate fruit to those wonderful notes of leather, polish, wood-smoke and sweet spice, the balance is impeccable with a hint of warmth. The length of the finish is magnificent, and that sweet, mulberry fruit character returns, with the most delicate of tannic grips.

Extraordinary wine at an every day price. complex with some fresh fruit but also autumn forest notes. not overly tannic either.

It’s always going to be a bit of a risk buying a Fronsac vintage from as long ago as 1998. First bottle was corked to the taste, with the cork wet, splitting and then disintegrating and the wine madeirised. I poured it away. Second was a hint of what it once was, drinkable, enjoyable but tired and past its best. That means that it’s a wine to sample before presenting it to guests and frankly, a disappointment.
