Potentino is a magical place, and with vineyards surrounding a magnificent 14th-century fort (pictured above), it is in my view the most beautiful estate in all Tuscany.

Potentino's organic wines, made in small batches by hand, are equally magical my favourite is their Sacromonte Rosso 2016 which we have recently shipped. It is 100% sangiovese, with 5+years of bottle age. Deliciously mature, with soft flavours of cherries and ripe red fruit, it also shows a hint of spice and lovely, underlying minerality. An utterly gorgeous wine - I am already well into my second case!

I know all their wines well having stayed their several times, including for the wedding of my youngest son who was married at Potentino (In fact, if ever youre in Tuscany, you can and should visit, have lunch and/or stay at Potentino I cannot more strongly recommend it.)

About Castello di Potentino:
The setting couldn’t be more idyllic, where four, rolling hectares of vineyard surround the 14th-century Castello di Potentino and on a site dating as far back as the mid-11th century. For some, it’s the most beautiful wine estate in all Tuscany. Here, very near to the Brunello di Montalcino denominazione, English proprietors Charlotte Horton and Alexander Greene have been making wine organically since having begun their renovation of the building in 2000.

Owing to the area’s unique micro-climate and mixed volcanic soils, the Greenes are able to grow three of the most site-sensitive varietals together in one small vineyard: Sangiovese, Pinot Noir and Alicante. Their delicious, handmade wines undergo minimum intervention, whereby varietals express their essence – here, ever so seductively.

How does the wine taste? Customer Reviews (3)
Organically farmed Sacromonte Rosso 2016 is 100% Sangiovese, with 5+ years of bottle age. Mature, complex, with soft flavours of cherries and ripe red fruit, also showing a hint of spice and an intriguing, underlying minerality. Gorgeous.

I have been buying this wine for several years now (currently drinking the the 2013 vintage). It is an excellent and consistent Sangiovese and is somewhat lighter and mellower than comparable Chiantis. Excellent value for money.

A luscious full bodied Sangiovese at an amazingly reasonable price. Really recommended.

"From an organic estate just outside the Brunello di Montalcino appellation, this is 100% Sangiovese, fermented and aged in French oak for 24 months. I find the paler colour of this eight-year-old wine to be attractive, maybe just a hint of amber on the rim. On the nose there's a developed character, moving into an autumnal phase with dried leaves, truffle and a little chestnut. It's Sangiovese in a Burgundy mould, with a little sour cherry added. The palate has that same briary, mushroom and truffle softness, the tannins are resolved and elegant and the balance of the acidity is very good, giving this clarity into the gently spicy finish. The opposite of blockbuster, it's a lovely wine of individual style."
