Gran Reserva Rioja, from Spain’s most famous wine region, is one of the wine world’s surprising secrets. Unlike the best wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy, put so swiftly on the market to earn money en primeur, Gran Reserva wines are made from the best vintages and released only after two years in oak casks and three in bottles. This results in delicious wines ready to drink upon release. And like all great wines they will get better still with age.
Monte Araya's Gran Reserva 2016 meticulously made by wine maker Santiago Garde, at his family’s vineyards in the Sierra Yerga are a real joy and our enthusiasm when we tasted them earlier this year was unanimous and very considerable.
