Amarone Della Valpolicella '3 Cru', Guerrieri Rizzardi, Veneto 2016
Rich Amarone is one of the hills around Veronas finest secrets. The grapes, principally corvina, are picked in the first fortnight of October and dried with great care for 120 days before vinification, since it is the quality of the skins that is so important. The wine is then kept in oak casks or barrels for two years from the first of January after fermentation before bottling. The result is one of Italys most glorious red wines - very full bodied, non-acidic and beautifully balanced. A joy to drink in cold winters or over Christmas, and a wonderful new discovery for many of us.
How does the wine taste?
Rizzardi are masters of Amarone, and the 3 Crus a blend of grapes from 3 top vineyards, is rightly regarded as one of the finest around. Here, elegance, finesse and complexity serve as perfect counterparts to its power, richness and intensity. Perfetto.
