The Left Bank — home to the Médoc and Graves — is dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon (with Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot in blended support), producing firmer, more structured wines with pronounced tannins and the ability to age for decades. The Right Bank, centred on Saint-Émilion and Pomerol, relies more heavily on Merlot (with Cabernet Franc playing a key supporting role), resulting in rounder, plumper wines with softer fruit and a more immediate approachability.
