"The 2024 Mas Carlot Générations Blanc, from the Costières de Nîmes in the southern Rhône, has appeared in these pages in previous vintages so often simply because I love it. And I'm not alone: its one of FVD's top sellers. Made by Nathalie Blanc-Marès (whose father, Paul-Antoine, owned fabled Au Pied du Cochon in Paris), it's a glorious blend of three of my favourite grapes: Marsanne, Roussanne and Viognier. I relish its peachy freshness, Mike enjoyed its will o the wisp creaminess and Mrs R and Bibi liked its smokiness. Ava spotted some spicy lychee and had another gulp to make sure."

Costières de Nîmes, situated in the beautiful countryside around Nîmes and Arles in the southern Rhône, make some of the best-value wines in the whole of France. Mas Carlot, long a favourite of Robert Parker, the Guide Hachette, and of ours, is the best of this interesting appellation. At its lovely 18th-century mas (dialect for 'bastide', this one built by Admiral Grasset), the hugely talented Nathalie Blanc-Mares produces the estate's two wines: a white blend of Roussanne, Varsanne and viognier, and a red blend of Grenache and Syrah wines I never want to live without.
