Special Cuvée, Bollinger
Bollinger is unquestionably among the greatest of all champagnes and unique in that it remains family owned - very much in contrast with the great majority of champagne houses being owned by big conglomerates. Long my favourite, Champagne Bollinger is also the oldest Royal Warrant holder, and as we all know, James Bonds favourite, too.
23 years ago, Peter Florence, founder of the Hay Festival, James Naughtie of the BBC and I joined with Bollinger to invent the Bollinger Everyman Wodehouse Prize for the funniest novel of the year. Winners have included Howard Jacobson (The Mighty Waltzer), Michael Frayn (Spies), Marina Lewycka (A Short History of Tractors in Ukrainian), Paul Torday (Salmon Fishing in the Yemen), Ian McEwan (Solar), Guy Kennaway (The Accidental Collector) and last years winner Percival Everetts dark satire The Trees. It has been a joy for me to get to know Bollinger and the Scottish born Madame Bollingers house so well over more than two decades now.
