The late Steven Spurrier (whose memoirs, Wine - A Way of Life I would later publish) introduced me to the hugely talented Alessandra Bindi Sergardi, having warmly recommended her wines at a wine fair some years ago. Steven was right. The wines of Bindi Sergardi are quite exceptional. Exceptional, too, in that they are made with fruit from their vineyards outside Siena which the family have worked since 1349. In recent vintages they have regularly scored 93, 94 and even 95 points.

Nicolò is named after the head of the Bindi Sergardi family and owner of the estate who remembers wines being vinified like this from his childhood. The wine is made through an ancient Tuscan technique called "Governo" which Tom Cannavan from wine-pages.com described a few weeks ago (read below). Here's an exquisite red wine with depth from the combination of two different treatments of the grapes.

Alessandra Bindi Sergardi Casini explains that "Nicolò" encompasses the essence of Bindi Sergardi - 'Authenticity' due to the expression of a single terroir. 'Integrity' due to its ancient method of vinification and 'Audacity' as this is a modern interpretation of an extremely traditional method of making winemkaing.

About Bindi Sergardi:
With 23 generations of winemaking on a property dating back to the early 14th century, Bindi Sergardi are woven very deeply into Sienese history and tradition. You could say Bindi Sergardi are Tuscan winemaking.

The estates beautiful 1000 hectares are set among the ancient villages of Vagliagli and Monteriggioni and within Chiantis three prestigious DOCGs: Classico, Chianti and Chianti Colli. Alessandra has been at the helm since 2005, bringing new light to the family business and ensuring their Achille, Governo all'uso and 'La Ghirlanda' continue in rendering wines of exceptional elegance and expression.

How does the wine taste? Customer Reviews (3)
Deep, rich, rewarding. Here, the traditional Tuscan ‘Governo’ practice of integrating partially dried grapes to the vinification process adds an extra level of intensity and texture for a wellstructured, harmonious and layered palate.

Loved this with pasta and a rich arrabbiata sauce

A deep rich red which will probably age well for some years to come. Nose needs a little time to open before heady brambly aroma excites the nose. Excellent autumn fruit on the mouth followed by good length that lasts. Needs to be put down between sips and goes well with venison steak and saddle of lamb.

"A little like the Amarone's of the Veneto, Governo is an ancient technique of making wines in Tuscany, partly from dried grapes. Made from 100% Sangiovese grown at 300 metres altitude, it spent a few months in used French oak barriques. Interesting, smoky and herbal nose here, a touch of leafiness and quite meaty tones to the black plum fruit. In the mouth there is plenty of juiciness, but a lean, gripping tannin adds a chewy and serious edge. Some cherry inflections to the acidity, and a concentrated finish."
Tom Cannavan, Wine-pages.com
"Lots of crushed blackberries and black cherries on the nose and palate, together with plenty of walnuts and more bitter walnut shells. Medium-to full-bodied with well-integrated tannins and a dense, fruit and nut finish that pushes on and on. Loads of character here. Something quite special. Enjoy now, or let it develop for a while in the bottle."
