Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Domaine de Pignan 2013
In the glass there's an immediate visual cue that this wine has spent time resting in the bottle, as a pale, brick-red tint creeps in from the sides towards the deep, cherry coloured core.
The nose is fruit-forward, with pronounced aromas of spicy plums, fig and prune, rich punchy and luscious, and it's worth taking a moment to unravel the aromatic complexity on offer.
The palate is warm, spicy and grippy. Morello cherry leads the way with dark forest fruit, white pepper and spice with a slightly savoury twist, progressing to a firm, structured mouth-coating tannic grip. The grip subsides allowing for the sweet, dark fruit and spice to return and hang long on the palate.
In sum, this is a lovely, perfectly mature Châteauneuf-du-Pape offering the complexity and finesse that can only come with patience, and one to deliver immediate drinking pleasure.
