'Pergolaia' Caiarossa Toscana Rosso 2003
We are down to our last 30 cases of Pergolaia 2003, a stunning and lovely baby 'Super Tuscan' with more than 15 years of bottle age from the famous biodynamic Caiarossa estate, owned and run by Château Giscours of Margaux.
The wine is a delightful blend of sangiovese, cabernet franc and merlot. It has complex rich fruit with a wonderful long finish. To find a mature wine of this quality - and at this very affordable price - is a rare treat for us all.

How does the wine taste?
The 2003 vintage in Tuscany has a reputation for producing wines which are exceptionally age-worthy and the 'Pergolaia' Caiarossa Toscana Rosso is a perfect example. There's no shortcut to creating the complex layers of flavour which are found in mature examples of fine wine. Here we have soft, supple tannins with delicious rich fruit and a brilliant long finish with beautiful flavours of tobacco and leather. It really is a wine of both class and style and will continue to drink well for at least 3 years.
What do the critics say?
"I was convinced that the 2003 Pergolaia second wine of Super Tuscan Caiarossa would be over the hill. Its reddish brown hue and slightly dumb nose suggested as much but, gosh, one sip and I was smitten. The Sangiovese/Cabernet Franc/Merlot fruit has more than held up and its gloriously, defiantly rich, soft and mellow with concentrated cherry/strawberry flavours, leather, vanilla and spice."
Jonathan Ray, The Spectator
"...how about an 18-year-old super-Tuscan for less than £20? From a biodynamic estate owned and run by Château Giscours of Margaux, it's a blend of Sangiovese with Cabernet Franc and Merlot. Once again there's a mellow maturity to the colour, and the nose doesn't offer much other than a hint of truffle, olive and sweet damp earth, maybe a little cedar in there too. On the palate it is a different matter: I very much enjoyed its deep-set, rich fruitcake character, beautifully integrated oak and palate riven with a cherry-ripe acidity and taut tannin structure. It drinks really well, finishing on tobacco spice, coffee and black fruit, and is a bit of a steal for a mature wine of such quality. Drink over the next couple of years."
