'Pergolaia' Caiarossa Toscana Rosso 2003
We have sold over 200 cases of the stunning 2005 Pergolaia from Tuscany in the last year and it's pretty much all gone. Fortunately, the estate have agreed to release to us the new 2003 vintage from their cellars which is now here and ready to dispatch. It is a delightful fully mature super Tuscan blend of sangiovese, cabernet franc and merlot from the renowned Caiarossa vineyards in Tuscany. It is now drinking beautifully with over 15 years of bottle age.
We tasted this of course before confirming our order and it doesn't disappoint. The 2003 Pergolaia is absolutely stunning and with its additional two years in bottle, it offers arguably a touch more fruit concentration than the '05, yet it retains the high level of complexity and a wonderful, lengthy finish.
Both are superb wines from a remarkable biodynamic estate, close to the coast, in the same ownership as Château Giscours 3ème Cru Classé in Margaux. If you can't decide between the two, we have put together a mixed case with six bottles of each for you to enjoy.
How does the wine taste?
The 2003 vintage in Tuscany has a reputation for producing wines which are exceptionally age-worthy and the 'Pergolaia' Caiarossa Toscana Rosso is a perfect example. There's no shortcut to creating the complex layers of flavour which are found in mature examples of fine wine. Here we have soft, supple tannins with delicious rich fruit and a brilliant long finish with beautiful flavours of tobacco and leather. It really is a wine of both class and style and will continue to drink well for at least 3 years.
